Sumo Battle

Time limit: 3 minutes

Control method: Remote-controlled

This challenge will test the power of your robot as well as its manoeuvrability.

You will be paired up against an opponent and placed head-to-head. Using remote controls, you must attempt to push the other robot out (and off) of a course measuring 2.2m by 1.8m. The matches will be held on a knock-out basis and each successful robot in each battle will face the winner of another pair, and so on until a final battle can take place.

The ‘course’ will be made out of three tables folded to the ground and pushed together. Any gaps between the tables will be covered by white duct tape. The table surface will be a maximum of 3cm above the ground to avoid damaging the robots when they are pushed off.

If a robot leaves the arena accidentally then they forfeit the contest as they are deemed to have gone ‘out of control’.

In the event of neither robot winning outright after 3 minutes, the judges will make a decision based on control and “aggression”. Intentional damage to another robot will result in disqualification. It is up to the driver of each robot to ensure that no damage is caused.

The decision of the judge is final. Please don’t argue – remember, this is supposed to be fun.

Due to the number of competitors, some robots may receive a ‘bye’ to the next round. This will be at random and announced well in advance of the competition. No points will be awarded as a result of a ‘bye’.

Points will be awarded as follows:

  • The winner of each battle will be awarded 10 points.
  • 25 bonus points will be awarded to the winner of the final battle.
  • No points will be awarded as a result of a ‘bye’.

Penalties:

  • No rescues are allowed due to the aim of the challenge.
  • Intentional damage caused to another robot will result in disqualification. Any points accrued to that point will count towards the overall total.
